چکیده

Significant recombination of the majority ion species has been observed in the divertor region of Alcator C-Mod under detached conditions. This determination is made by analysis of the visible spectrum from the divertor, in particular the Balmer series line emission and the observed recombination continuum, including an apparent recombination edge at-375 nm. The analysis shows that the electron temperature in the recombining plasma is 0.8-1.5 eV. The measured volume recombination rate is comparable to the rate of ion collection at the divertor plates. The dominant recombination mechanism is 3-body recombination into excited states (e+e+D+-* Do+e), although ra-diative recombination (e+D+ => Do+hv) contributes-5% to the total rate. shows that the upper levels of these transitions are populated primarily by recombination. Thus the brightnesses of the Balmer series (and Lyman series) are directly related to the recombination rate.

PFC / JA - 95 - 42 X - ray and VUV Observations of Mo 23 + - M 033 + Brightness Profiles from Alcator C - Mod Plasmas

Brightness profiles of X-ray and VUV lines from eight molybdenum charge states between Mo 23+ and Mo 33+ have been measured in Alcator C-Mod plasmas. These spatial profiles agree very well with those predicted by a model which includes ionization, recombination, excitation and transport. Comparison with the profiles of many different charge states provides severe constraints upon the rates used...

PFC/JA-97-26 Study of the discrete-to-continuum transition in a Balmer spectrum from Alcator C-Mod divertor plasmas

Under detached plasma conditions in Alcator C-Mod tokamak, the measured spectra show pronounced merging of Balmer series lines and a photorecombination continuum edge which is not a sharp step. This phenomenon, known as a smooth discrete-to-continuum transition, is typical only for high density (> 10 m ) low temperature (Te 1 eV) recombining plasmas. A theoretical model capable of treating this...

PFC / JA - % - 7 Application of collisional - radiative , atomic - molecular model to the recombining divertor plasma

Recombination of hydrogen plasma in the divertor volume can be considered as a simple explanation of divertor plasma detachment phenomena experimentally observed on many tokamaks. As will be shown in this report, the presence of rotationally and vibrationally excited molecules significantly enhance the conventional three-body recombination of plasma and expand the plasma temperature and density...

PFC / JA - 96 - 23 Particle Drift Effects on the Alcator C - Mod Divertor

The sign of the toroidal magnetic field has a major effect on the divertor in Alcator C-Mod, determining whether the higher recycling is on the inboard or outboard side and leading to inboard/outboard temperature and density differences up to a factor of ten. A recently published paper [1] reported in detail on these observations, which are an indication of the importance of plasma particle dri...
